Leah Bernice Nielsen Moon was born on February 27, 1924, in Sugar City, Idaho to Joseph "Joe" William Nielsen and Tessie Niederer. Leah is the youngest of five children, Joseph Eldred, Arvella Magie, DeLila Leona, Iretta Helen, born to Joe and Tessie.
Leah attended schools in Sugar City and Rexburg and was married to her sweetheart, Junius Edward Moon on April 12, 1941, in Sugar City. On February 13, 1952, their marriage was solemnized for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Leah and Junius had three sons, Junius Blair (Joyce) Moon, Dennis Lee (Rita) Moon, and Bradley R (Cynthia) Moon. Leah was a lifelong active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many positions in the Mutual Improvement Association (MIA), Primary, Sunday School, Relief Society and other ward callings. She also served for many years as an ordinance worker in the Idaho Falls and Rexburg temples.
Leah and Junius lived most of their lives in Sugar City. In 1959 they moved from the north side of Sugar City to the south side of Sugar City, they thought moving south would provide warmer weather in the winter time. In June, 1976, they lost their home, as so many others did, due to the Teton Dam disaster. In 1977 they built a new home on the same property as the destroyed home, she has lived there until her death.
During her life, Leah worked at American Potato, Tibbits Warehouse, Roger Brothers, Artco and Ricks College. Leah enjoyed reading, crocheting, cake decorating, canning and studying the scriptures. Leah and Junius' greatest passion was square dancing throughout the Intermountain West, which they participated in for many years.
Leah always welcomed friends and family members into her home, treating them with genuine kindness and love. During the past 15 years or so, the Sugar First Ward Young Women would come into Leah's home and decorate her Christmas tree and her home for the Christmas holidays. The Young Men would decorate the outside of her home and yard in the festive spirit of Christmas. When finished with the decorating, Leah relished the warm embraces freely given to her by the Young Women and Young Men. In reality, the time spent with the Young Women and Young Men decorating her home was the highlight of the holidays for Leah. She truly loved the youth of the Ward.
Leah was preceded in death by her eternal sweetheart, Junius (2001), her son Blair (2010), her three beloved daughters-in-law (Joyce, Rita, and Cynthia), (1998 and 2011), and two grandchildren (Kara and Kevin) (1991 and 2010), her parents, all of her siblings and their spouses. Leah is the last of her generation in the Moon and Nielsen families. Leah is survived by her two sons, Dennis (Lora Jo) and Brad, 9 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
This world is a better place to live because of Leah Nielsen Moon, who was / IS truly loved by all that knew her, living her life as a great example of Christ-like love and compassion. She will be missed but her memory will live forever in the hearts of those who knew her.
