Lee W. Hubbard, 90, of Rexburg, passed away from natural causes at his home on Thursday, October 10, 2013.
He was born May 24, 1923, the eldest child of Wm. Roland and Margaret Irene Ard Hubbard, in Rexburg, Idaho.
Except for serving in World War II in the Army, and attending college in San Francisco, California, Lee lived his entire life in the Rexburg area.
He was raised on a dry farm east of Rexburg along with his brother, Orrin, and sister, Rose. Following graduation from Madison High School in 1938, he continued to work on the family farm, until 1942. He received notice that he was drafted. He joined the U.S. Army and following basic training, he shipped out to the south Pacific where he worked as a diesel mechanic. He said his years working on the farm fixing his dad's Caterpillar tractor was instrumental in his army assignment. At the end of the war, the Army discharged him and he returned home to the farm.
In the mid-1950's, Lee attended Heald College in San Francisco where he studied and received a diploma in 1958 as an electronics technician. He used this knowledge on several jobs, first at the INEL and later while working for Hopkins Well Drilling in the 1960's.
In the 1970's, he bought into a gun smithing business with a friend, and worked there until the 1980's when his partner died. Dean Zollinger bought the business and Lee continued working there for several more years.
In the 1990's, Lee assisted with the creation of a shooting range west of Rexburg. He also taught gun safety and shooting for interested kids in the area.
Lee was an avid hunter and fisherman in his younger years. Besides these outdoor sports he built a couple of snow planes while he lived on the farm. He also built black powder rifles.
He was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Rifle Association, and the Masonic Lodge.
Lee was preceded in death by his sister, Rose Mill, his brother, Orrin, and his parents.
He is survived by his nieces, Sherry Horton and Linda Wright; nephews, Wally Wright and Richard Hubbard; 3 grandnieces, a grandnephew, 3 great-grandnephews and a great-grandniece.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 15, at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg with Pastor Joe Lacy officiating. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Riverview Cemetery in St. Anthony. Military rites will be conducted by the Madison County Veterans and Idaho Honor Guard.
The family wishes to thank Encompass Hospice, Pastor Lacy, and the many friends and neighbors who assisted in Lee's care for the last few months of his life.
