Obituary

Les passed away on February 23, 2022, just a month shy of his 80th birthday. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 23, 1942 to Wilson Lester and Josephine Santoro Lane. In his youth he spent 2 years at St. Leo's Military Academy in South Carolina. It was a lonely time for him but he was later able to attend an elementary school in Chicago. He loved being near his mom and dad, and their extended families. The best part was living in an Italian neighborhood; he loved the food and the neighborhood games. When he was 9 years old, he moved to California with his mother and step-father. He has fond memories of California and of being with his cousin and celebrating holidays together. He owned a cabin in Boulder Creek. He has many stories of cooking for his two boys and playing games together. They also worked on motorcycles together.

When his family moved to Southern California, his mother changed his name to Jerome August Peralo. He was known by this name until 1995 when he moved to Colorado and changed his name back to Les Lane. He had grown up without his father around. When they finally connected later in life, his father was too sick to communicate with Les. He always felt good about going back to his original name because it gave him a connection to his father.

After High School Graduation, he joined the Navy and headed north to Whidbey Island and later Treasure Island studying electronics.  After serving in the Navy for 4 years, Les ended up in the San Jose area and he began a 50 year career in Technical Writing. He was self-employed for 30 years and worked for many of the large electronic companies in the bay area. Later in his career, he worked for 20 years writing technical manuals for government projects.

He married his high school sweetheart, Sherrie Greene. They had two boys, Patrick Jerome Peralo and Anthony August Peralo. He and Sherrie were divorced and Les married Sarah Haynie. She had 4 children and he enjoyed those years spending time with his step-children. The family was active with their motorcycle riding, spending time at a beach house. He and Sarah later divorced and he moved to Colorado to marry Nancy Hansen and they were sealed in the Logan Utah Temple. She had 5 children and he had another opportunity to parent some more step-children. He always knew how to spoil the children around him.

An important part in his life was joining the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He spoke of the change this made in his life. He served in three Bishoprics, taught the youth a few times, was a Scout Leader, was a ward Mission Leader and taught the men in Priesthood. Later he and Nancy served a service mission for the Idaho Falls, Idaho Mission.

Throughout his life he loved to ride motorcycles, take photos of beautiful things, fish in fresh streams, spend time at the beach and find treasures at estate sales and antiques stores. The other thing he loved doing was meeting new people and helping those in need. He was a very compassionate and thoughtful man. He had such a fun and tender spirit about him. He had a crazy sense of humor that would make us all laugh. He loved being with his nieces and nephews. He was known for paying anyone $20 for eating a bug, jumping in a waterfall or running through icy Yellowstone Lake. All the young ones took advantage of this financial opportunity.

Les is survived by his wife, Nancy, and a sister, Renae.
