Lorin Ellis Papworth, died February 28, 2015, in Rexburg, Idaho, six days before his 85th birthday. Lorin was born March 5, 1930, in Challis, Idaho, to James Ellis and Leota Kelley Papworth.
Lorin spent his life working. He began mowing lawns and chopping kindling when he was twelve, and at thirteen he was hired to work for the Tri State Lumber Company for 30¢ an hour. After graduating from Mackay High School, he married Shirley Mae Ellis. What followed was 63 years of friendship, love, and joy at building a life together.
In 1951, as the Korean War began, Lorin was drafted into military service; and this service took Lorin and Shirley to Alabama. Afterward, they returned to their home state of Idaho, living in Mackay and Arco before ultimately settling in Lewiston, where they lived for 54 years.
Lorin had a 41-year career in the retail lumber industry. Even without a formal college education Lorin was known for his managerial skills and his intellect, with an impressive ability to mentally calculate any amount of "board-feet." Throughout his work in the lumber business, he met many people in the Lewiston area, and all responded to his quick wit, strong work ethic, and kindness.
Although work demanded much of Lorin's time, he also focused on adoring his wife and loving and raising their four children. During their time in Lewiston, this family circle grew to include many friends and neighbors. Lorin was an active and dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as a bishop, in the stake presidency, as a temple worker in the Spokane Washington temple, and as stake patriarch.
Family, church, and work were Lorin's priorities. However, he found time for other interests. Lorin loved being outdoors, spending time camping and fishing whenever possible. He also loved caring for his yard and gardening; Lorin's peaches and tomatoes delighted many family and friends.
Lorin and his "Shirl-girl" were separated by death for only three months, with Shirley passing away in November 2014. They are survived by their four children: Lorna (Charlie) Lackey, James (Anne) Papworth, Kristi (Dean) Sanderson, and Donna (John) Stellmon. They have 19 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. Lorin is also loved and remembered by his sister Winnie Mae and half-brothers Allen and Kelly Hardman, as well as other family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, March 7, 2015, at the Mackay Idaho LDS church house, 531 Spruce, Mackay, Idaho. The family will receive friends Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Burial will be in the Mackay Cemetery under the direction of Flamm Funeral Home. A memorial service will also be held in Lewiston, Idaho, on March 21.
