Lyle R Smith, 87, of Rexburg, died September 22, 2017, of natural causes. He was born February 19, 1930, in Sugar City, Idaho, to Hilbert and Letha Ensign Roberts Smith. He was raised and attended school in Sugar City.
He married Patricia Makinen on December 21, 1954, in the Little White Church in Elk Mountain. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Patricia died on September 10, 2015.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He farmed for Clair Robinson in the Newdale area. He retired from farming and moved to Wyoming where he worked for the Wyoming State Highway Department. He worked there for a number of years until he reached retirement age. After retiring from the highway department, he moved back to Rexburg to be close to his family.
He loved fishing and did a lot of ice fishing while living in Wyoming. He was an avid side-seat driver. He loved solving word puzzles of all types, especially crossword puzzles.
He is survived by his son Terry (Lynn) Smith of Washington; daughters, Jacki (Robert) Luehoff of Idaho Falls, Susan Smith of Rexburg; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two brothers and four sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 30, at the Millhollow LDS Chapel. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Sugar City Cemetery.
