Marjorie Opal Jeppson Goodliffe, 89, of Rexburg, died on Nov. 28, 2015, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls of congestive heart failure.
She was born Nov. 2, 1926, in Archer, to Olin Henry Jeppson and Bertha Rebecca Weekes Jeppson. She was the second child and oldest daughter of the family. She grew up, with one brother and four sisters, working on the family farm.
She attended elementary school in Archer, Tetonia and Darby, and graduated from Madison High School. She attended Ricks College and graduated with a teaching certificate and for two years was employed by Madison School District. Later, she continued her education earning a bachelor's degree from Idaho State University in elementary education, while continuing to teach and raise her family. She taught for Fremont School District, mainly as a fourth grade teacher at Parker-Egin Elementary, for 29 years. She was known for teaching her students to love music and reading, along with holding many programs where the children could display their talents.
She took great pleasure in music and singing, and she loved to play the piano, organ and accordion.
She married Irvun Goodliffe of Rexburg June 4, 1948. They had six children over the next seven years. Marjorie cared for her family and her ailing mother-in-law. She also grew a large vegetable garden along with all types of berries, flowers and fruits. She fed and milked the cow. The couple were later divorced. Irvun became ill, and during his last years, Marjorie helped take care of him.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From a young age, Marjorie faithfully served in many church callings, singing in ward and stake choirs. She served as a chorister, pianist, organist, and sports and camp director. She provided large floral arrangements from her garden for weekly Sunday services and after the service, the bouquets were given to widows or other people to help brighten their lives.
She loved flowers and grew spectacular flowers of all kinds. She would readily share her flowers, bulbs, and starts, along with vegetables from her garden, with family and friends. She continued the family tradition of arranging many bouquets each Memorial Day and placing them on family graves. She blessed her neighbors, ward and family with her talents, love and compassion. She created beautiful quilts and rugs which she gave to people close to her, including her grandchildren.
She served in the temple. She would prepare and serve food for neighbors and friends who were grieving or ill. She enjoyed family reunions, ward, and block parties and often provided transportation to those who needed the help.
She loved to spend time in the mountains and one of her greatest pleasures was going picking huckleberries in the late summer.
Her home was destroyed in the Teton Dam flood and Marjorie moved from her beloved Rexburg 2nd Ward to her new, just as beloved, Rexburg 15th Ward.
She served a mission for the LDS Church in South Carolina from 1978 to 1980.
Marjorie was always caring for others. Along with her mother-in-law and husband, Marjorie cared for her ailing son, Henry, until he died in 2006. She also raised two grandchildren.
During the last years, Marjorie faced many health challenges with optimism. She moved to the Homestead Assisted Living Center in early 2013. She developed many new friendships and loved to play bingo and Rummikub, watch movies, read, and socialize with her many good friends. She also held a church position at the Homestead serving as Relief Society pianist. The family is grateful for the loving care she received at the Homestead.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Henry David Goodliffe; a brother, Nilo Jeppson; and her sister, Ida Gene Hone.
Survivors include her children, Opal (Dale) Fowler of Eagle River, Alaska, Rulon Goodliffe of Rexburg, Marvin (Janet) Goodliffe of Rexburg, Anna Goodliffe of Pocatello, and Harold Goodliffe of Logan, Utah; 22 grandchildren; and 41 great-grandchildren; sisters, Therba Paul of Rexburg; Roxcy Jeppson of Provo and Julia Atwood of Pingree.
