Mark Olson Gehmlich, 70, of Rexburg, died peacefully Tuesday, May 24, after a battle with cancer, at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center. He was born May 2, 1941, in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada to Fritz Rudolph and Edna Olson Gehmlich. He was raised and attended school in Picture Butte, Canada.
He attended Ricks College, University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and the University of Alberta Medical School.
He married Jeanne Merrill on August 28, 1964 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple.
Dr. Gehmlich had a Family Practice in Rexburg from 1973 until 1988. He then took a job as Director of Student Health at Ricks College. He was the Collegiate Sports Team Physician and loved traveling with the football team. He worked as a physician at Community Care and the INL. He also worked as an emergency room physician at Madison Memorial Hospital from 1973 to 2002.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a mission in the Southwest Indian Mission where he spoke the Navajo language. He served as Bishop of his home ward and a college ward. He served on the High Council and as Gospel Doctrine teacher.
He was an avid photographer, woodworker, and metal and wood engraver. He loved sports, especially playing hockey as a goalie. He loved cars. He was a very skilled artist with his hands. He was a perfectionist and passionate about everything he tried. Mark was very proud of his family. They are of the most import, especially his beloved wife Jeanne.
He is survived by his wife Jeanne of Rexburg; children, Heidi (Tom) Thomson of Idaho Falls, Scott (Krista) Gehmlich of Sugar City, Todd (Jan) Gehmlich, Karl (Cadence) Gehmlich and Lori (Ben) Rydalch all of Rexburg; a sister Charlotte Walker of Rexburg; and 18 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and step-father Paul Stewart.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 27 at the Salem LDS Chapel, with Bishop Cleve Bagley officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and Friday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Sugar City Cemetery.
