Obituary

On March 1, 2024, Marlyn Deborah Tonks, passed away peacefully at her home in St. Anthony, Idaho, at the age of 88.  Marlyn was born on December 2, 1935 in Teton City, Idaho to Russel Windley Fenton and Mary Elizabeth Thomson.  Marlyn was the oldest of four girls born to Russel and Mary Fenton, and grew up in St. Anthony, Idaho in the family home on 4th North.  Her father owned a small farm on the north bank of the Teton River just north of Teton City.  Marlyn graduated from South Fremont High School in 1954.


Marlyn married Gerald B. Tonks from Victor, Idaho, on April 28, 1955, in the Idaho Falls Temple.  Gerald and Marlyn lived in St. Anthony until they moved to California in 1958, where they purchased a home on Idahome Street in West Covina. They lived there for 47 years. Marlyn worked for Bank of America for over 30 years as a teller, loan officer, and assistant branch manager.  She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in many callings in the Relief Society and the Young Women's Programs.  Marlyn also served as an early morning seminary teacher for high school students for several years, and later served a full-time mission with her husband in the California Arcadia Mission.  She loved to sing and enjoyed her many years singing in the Mellodaires choir in Idaho.  Marlyn also loved family history and served in a variety of leadership positions in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers organization. Marlyn will always be remembered for her kindness to so many people over the years.


Gerald and Marlyn moved back to St. Anthony in 2005 in order to be closer to their siblings.  Gerald passed away at the age of 81 in 2014.  Marlyn is survived by her sisters, Beverly Ellsworth and Rosalind Gorton, and her son Paul Tonks.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister RaNae Snook, and her two sons David and Kevin Tonks.  Marlyn has 15 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.


Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 6th at 2:00 PM at the St. Anthony 4th Ward Chapel located at 507 W. 2nd North, St. Anthony, Idaho.  Friends and family are also invited to attend a viewing on Tuesday, March 5th from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM, or from 1:00 PM to 1:45 PM on Wednesday, March 6th in the Relief Society Room on the west side of the St. Anthony 4th Ward Chapel.  After the funeral services, a short graveside ceremony and the interment will take place at the Teton-Newdale Cemetery, where Marlyn will be laid to rest next to her husband of 59 years, and near her parents, her son Kevin, and her sister RaNae.
