Obituary

Our kind father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Marvin Bliss Harmer passed away on 2 June 2025 at the age of 90 in the loving home of his daughter, Dawn Pulsipher.

Bliss was born on 20 May 1935, in Mapleton, Utah to Ralph Harmer and Cecelia Grace Koyle. He loved his small farming community and relating stories about his rural childhood. Although he was not tall in stature, Bliss was a good athlete. As he later liked to claim when wrestling with his children, he was "180 pounds of blue twisted steel." At Springville High, he played basketball on the 1952 state championship team, and at Snow College he played football.

After graduating from Snow College with a two-year degree, Bliss served a two-and-a-half-year mission to France, where he bore a strong testimony of Jesus Christ, and developed a lifelong love of fine cheese, everything French, and international travel.

Bliss married the love of his life, Kathryn Mortensen, on 18 March 1960, in the Salt Lake Temple. He loved to call her "Kath" and enjoyed her constant chatter, which complemented his quiet nature. Together they gave service to their family, church, friends, and community, with Kathy being the instigator and Bliss being the driver and assistant. They were inseparable during their empty nester years.

After graduating from Brigham Young University with a teaching degree, Bliss taught Physics, Chemistry, and French at Olympus High School and Bingham High School. After a short career selling cars—he always loved a nice car!—he finally found his passion as a Financial Consultant.

Bliss loved the Utah Jazz, his BYU Cougars, singing in choirs, reading, doing puzzles, and playing backgammon. He always had a garden and often his family could live off the produce during the summer months. Bliss did not speak unkindly about anyone, was optimistic, and never complained, even when life was hard.

Bliss served as a stake missionary, scoutmaster, and ministering brother. With Kathy, he served a 10-year ministry at the Utah State Penitentiary. He also spent many years doing research and temple work for the people on the Danish Isle of Møn. But his favorite calling of all was being a father and grandfather.

Bliss had a firm testimony of the Restored Gospel and loved being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved his Savior, loved to talk about His return, and counted on being "twinkled" at that event. While he didn't live to see that, we are confident he is now in the arms of his God and his beloved "Kath."

Bliss was preceded in death by his wife Kathy, parents Ralph and Grace, sister Shirlene, brothers Kay, Russ, and Jim, as well as grandsons Justin and Jeremy Brooks and great-grandson Owen McMurray. He is survived by his sister Myrna, his children, Kristin (Sean) McMurray, Ron (Colette) Harmer, Dawn (David) Pulsipher, Cynthia (Matthew) Brooks, Greg (Jennifer) Harmer, and Matthew (Elizabeth) Harmer, his Native American daughter, Mae Dean Begay, 36 grandchildren, and 35 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, 5 July 2025 at 10:00 AM at the Garden Heights South Ward chapel, 2220 Fisher Lane, Salt Lake City, Utah.
