Obituary

Melba Furniss Parkinson, 75, of Rexburg, died Aug. 26, 2014, at her home near Sugar City.

She was born May 27, 1939, in Teton, Idaho, to Lewis and Joy Furniss. Melba attended Teton Elementary and South Fremont High School.

On April 5, 1961, she married Don T. Parkinson. In their early years of marriage, they lived on the family farm where she helped cook for the hired men. During these years their two children were born, Kathy and Allen. Later, they moved to Rexburg and she worked at Doyle Walkers restaurant. In later years, she worked alongside her husband at Sun Glo, where they retired together. After retirement, Melba and Don enjoyed long car rides, bird watching and going out to breakfast. They were always together.

When they were raising their kids, she enjoyed many fishing trips and overnight road trips. She did a lot of home canning. Then when the grandkids came along, they were her life. She helped raise them while their mom worked.

She was a member of Grace Baptist Church in Rexburg, where she helped with the children's Kings Kids Bible Club. All the kids there thought of her as Grandma.

Melba loved spending time with great-grandkids. She was so proud of them; that is all she talked about and would show their pictures to anyone who would look.

She kept in touch with all her siblings, having lunch and phone visits.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, her son, Allen, and daughter, Kathy, grandchildren, Danielle (Matt) Swensen; Robert Nolle and Sarah Cassidy. Great- grandchildren include Gage, Charlette Ryan and Jace Swensen. She also has a great-granddaughter on the way in January. She is also survived by a brother, Gary (Lois) Furniss and sisters, Barbara (Gary) Jenkins, Marcile (Gail) Gorder and Linda (Blaine) Thurber.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister, Irene Dickson.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 30, at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ behind Broulim's in St Anthony. The family will visit with friends from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. prior to services at the Church of Christ.
