Obituary

Merlin J. Keele, 79, resident of St. George, Utah , formerly of Rexburg, Idaho died Friday, July 29, 2011, after a battle with cancer at his summer home in Palisades, Idaho.

He was born August 30,1932, in Independence, Idaho, to Henry Jefferson Keele and Ida Margaret Hansen Keele. He was raised and attended school in Independence and Rexburg. He married Sharen Hemming on June 26,1951 in the Idaho Falls LDS temple.

Merlin worked for Boeing Aircraft Company in Seattle, Washington from August 1955 to August of 1962. Merlin and Sharen owned and operated Hemming Shoe Store and later the Shoe Haus from August 1962 until February 1984. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He and Sharen served two full time missions, the first mission was to Leeds England and the second to Micronesia Guam. He served in several bishoprics, as a ward clerk several times, on numerous High Councils and as a bishop of a college student ward. He served as a home teacher his whole adult life.

Merlin was very proud of his family, they were the most important part of his life; especially his sweetheart and wife, Sharen. Merlin was talented in wood working, and built the summer home in Palisades. He loved being in the mountains. He was known for his hard work ethic and was a perfectionist and passionate about everything he did. He loved sports, especially baseball and football, and loved to cross country and down hill ski.

He is survived by his wife, Sharen, of St. George, Utah; his four children, Dana (Steve) Hoopes of Tetonia, Idaho; Shelley (Greg) Wille of Cody, Wyoming; Holly (Craig) Harris of Saline, Michigan; and Blyss (Kendal) Capell of Brigham City, Utah, an older sister, Lorna, and two younger brothers, Robert and Marvin. He has 21 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson and an older sister.

Funeral services will be held in Rexburg, at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 2, 2011, at the 11th LDS Ward Chapel (590 Summerwood) with Bishop Kevin Anderson officiating. The family will receive friends and family on Monday, August 1st from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg. Interment will be in the Rexburg Cemetery.
