Obituary

Nola Jean (Olive) Gallup beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away on December 28, 2021, at the Homestead in Rexburg, Idaho. She was 88 years old. Nola was born to Douglas Ernest and Mary Muriel (Crawford) Olive on February 21, 1933 in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada where she grew up with two sisters, her older sister, Marilyn Lorraine (William) Berry and her younger sister, Muriel Ernestine (Joel) Wilcox. Both have preceded her in death. She had a happy childhood surrounded by lots of aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents and friends. She loved the beach in the summer and ice skating and sledding in the winter.

When she was 9 years old two Latter-day Saint missionaries were in dire need of a place to live and through a happy set of miracles, ended up living with the Olives. Although they were told that they were not allowed to preach, Elder Beck and Elder McOmber taught through their examples and soon the entire family was baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their lives were changed forever.

A few years later, after the death of their father, the girls each decided to come to Utah to find young men who believed as they did so they could marry in the temple. Nola met a handsome young man from southern California, Norman Ray Gallup, who had changed his major and decided to come to BYU in January of 1956 just as she was arriving from New Brunswick. Their first date was April 1 st , they were engaged in June and married on August 21, 1956, in the Salt Lake Temple. They were so in love, and for 53 years were always together. Only the ravages of cancer separated them when Ray died in 2009. But they still have eternity!

Ray and Nola have six children that they love and raised to love the Lord and His Church. They taught them to work hard and play hard together. They leave behind Julie (John) Turner, Bruce (Carol Schofield) , David (Tricia Burum), Kristin (Joseph) Arnett, Danna (Benjamin) Hendrick, and Michael (Nichol Turley). They are also survived by 27 grandchildren, and 37 great-grandchildren.

Nola has served in many callings in the Church including Primary teacher, Relief Society Instructor, Young Women's President, Relief Society President, Stake Relief Society Counselor, Young Adult Advisor, Relief Society Secretary and many other callings in her long life of service to the Lord. Her testimony, enthusiasm and vivacious personality helped her fulfill these callings with fun, love and the Spirit. She served 5 missions for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, one for 9 months in the Maritime States before coming out to BYU, 3 with her beloved Ray—Seattle for a Family History mission, Boston on a CES mission and Salt Lake on a Church History Mission. She also served in Salt Lake on a Family History mission after Ray's passing.

Nola's life has touched many lives for good. Her love and service have helped many people. When she would hear of someone who needed something, she would bake something or help pay for their need, many times without their ever knowing. She especially loved little children throughout the world and has made friends with little ones from here to Egypt. Her grandchildren loved Grandma's zucchini brownies,  birthday cakes with money in them, her frozen push up ice cream treats (particularly when she would sneak them to them right before dinner), her yummy Quickie Cookies, See's caramel lollipops and her being silly with them especially when it was teasing grandpa. We know she has been joyfully welcomed through the veil!

Funeral services will be live streamed and will begin at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 31, 2021 at Flamm Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 10:00-10:45 a.m. Friday, December 31, prior to services. Interment will be in the Sugar City Cemetery.
