Opie Looking Sutherin,79, of Teton died Wednesday, November 21, 2018 at a care facility in Pocatello. She was born November 27, 1938 in Poplar, Montana on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation. She was raised by her great grandparents, Nimrod Davis and Mary Black Cloud Davis. She was a full blooded Assiniboine Indian.
She married Phil Sutherin in Wolf Point, Montana in 1961. Their marriage was latter solemnized in the Los Angles LDS Temple in 1964. Opie and Phil had five children; Gaylen, Gayla, Leila, Corina and Corwin. They lived in the western United States, including; Montana, California, Arizona, Utah, Washington and Idaho.
Opie served in many church callings for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including; primary teacher, girls camp director, Relief Society and loved visiting teaching and serving others.
Opie loved art and oil painting, going camping and going to Indian Pow Wows and doing Indian beadwork and quilting. Opie loved owls and anything with owls on it. Her favorite NFL football team was the Green Bay Packers. She loved watching her children and grandchildren playing sports and attended all their games.
She is survived by husband, Philip Sutherin of Teton, Idaho, her children; Gaylen (Marlene) Sutherin of Braintree, Vermont and Corwin (Bobbie) Sutherin of Pocatello, Idaho as well as 9 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren.
Opie is preceded in death by her mother, Leila Looking and 3 daughters; Leila O. Sutherin, Gayla G. Sutherin and Corina J. Stromberg.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 24, 2018 at the Teton LDS Chapel. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the church and again Saturday morning from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. prior to services.
