Obituary

Gladys Ozelle Earls Hathaway, 94, passed away quietly on the morning of December 30th, 2017, in Rexburg, ID. She was born December 29th, 1923 in Rock Hill, South Carolina, to William Richard and Daisy Oveda Earls. She was the oldest child, and the only daughter. Her younger brothers were Leroy and Robert Earls.

Her childhood was a happy one filled with many relatives and get togethers. Family and friends were always an important part of mother's life. Her family dinners were legendary, and if you left mother's home hungry, it was your own fault. Mother's home was always a safe sanctuary for any who needed one.

She was a beauty and was full of life. This caused Grandpa and Grandma Earls no end of worries. She was also very independent as a youth and throughout her lifetime.

After graduation from High School, she worked, but wanted to join the military and train as a nurse. Her parents forbade her from joining. She was too young, so she had to lie about her age. Mom served in World War 2 and trained to be an Army nurse. That is where she met Derrel P. "Buck" Hathaway. They were married while in the Army, at Fort Carson, CO. There were four children from this union. Richard Paul Hathaway, William Barron Hathaway, Karen Louise Hathaway, and Kevin W. Hathaway.

After mother and dad left the service, they worked from South Carolina to Idaho. They eventually settled in St. Anthony, ID. and mother worked for Madison Memorial Hospital and later for several years at the Youth Services Center, west of St. Anthony, until health forced her retirement.

She and dad travelled and cared for each other until his death in 1985. She and her daughter Karen continued to live together until mother's health made it necessary to move into an assisted living facility. She was living at Rexburg Care and Rehabilitation at the time of her death.

Mother was predeceased by her husband, Derrel Paul "Buck" Hathaway, her daughter Karen Louise Hathaway, her son William Barron Hathaway, her parents, her brother Leroy Barron (Marcella) Earls, and a great- granddaughter Cathryn Rose Clark. She is survived by her sons, Richard P. Hathaway, daughter-in law Faye Hathaway, and Kevin W. (Cathryn) Hathaway, her brother Robert (Joyce) Earls, thirteen grandchildren, and several great grand-children, nieces, and nephews that she loved very much.

At mother's request, there will be no visitation prior to services. Her funeral will be held today, January 2, 2018, at 1 p.m. at the Bert Flamm Mortuary in St. Anthony, ID. Burial will be in the Wilford Cemetery with military rites.

The family would like to extend our love and thanks to the many kind nurses and staff at Homestead Assisted Living, Life Care Center, and most recently, Rexburg Care and Rehabilitation. You have a difficult job, but your kindness and care are a blessing to the families and individuals you serve. We are also grateful for your many kind words and deeds at this difficult time.
