Paul Johnson Nye took his knowledge, his fishing pole, and his chain saw and left this world on Sunday evening May 4, 2014 --- with his loving, and caring wife by his side. He endured to the end and is survived by one of the best families in this world!
Paul was born in Ogden, Utah on August 27, 1936. He attended school in Ogden until the family moved to North Ogden when he was about eight years of age. He grew up riding horses, hunting, fishing and roaming the hills in the area. He graduated from Weber High School and worked at Ketchum Builder's Supply in Ogden before serving a Mission to the California Mission from 1957 to 1959. Returning from his mission he married Claudia Ellis in the Salt Lake Temple August 28, 1959. He then attended Weber College, graduating with an Associate Degree; Utah State University graduating with a Bachelors and a Masters Degree – majoring in History. While living in Logan, Paul worked at Cache Valley Builders and also taught at the Logan Jr. High.
The family loved spending time in Logan Canyon and at Bear Lake. In 1968 the family which consisted of five at the time, moved to Idyllwild CA located in the San Jacinto Mountains for an adventure and a year of teaching school. It was here Paul developed the love of "cutting wood' which continued until the day he died.
The family eventually moved to Rexburg, Idaho where Paul taught History and Book of Mormon at Ricks College for twenty five years. Paul loved teaching and felt a great reward when he would see his students "catch on." He worked summers doing construction in the Rexburg area as well as many summers away from home.
Paul was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved the Gospel and held it very dear to his heart.
His life was one of devotion to his family --- having them work by his side – cutting wood, building a home, raising animals, servicing vehicles and all kinds of things that go along with a little farm. His pride and joy was his family --- being so proud of eight sons and one daughter and thirty-four grandchildren. He had a great appreciation for his wife and all she did for him continually. He will be greatly missed but his legacy will continue to live on through his family.
He is survived by his wife Claudia and his family consisting of: Jeffrey Ellis (Kathleen) Nye, Farmington, UT; Ben Ellis (Luisa) Nye, Davis, CA; Dave Ellis (Cheri) Nye, Hyde Park, UT; Paula (Kurt) Hawks, Kaysville, UT; James Ellis (Lindsey) Nye, Alpine, UT; Wesley Ellis (Saundra) Nye, Springville, UT; Andrew Ellis (Brianna) Nye, Wasilla, AK; Steven Ellis (Dana) Nye, Oklahoma City, OK. He is also survived by his siblings, Alice (Pat) McGill of Ogden, UT, Dixie Carruth of Ogden, UT, Nyla (Kent) Petersen of Ogden, UT, Michael Nye of Rexburg, ID, Susan Harrop of Hooper, UT, and Phillip (Susan) Nye of Smithfield, UT.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Clyde, a son John Ellis Nye and a grand-daughter Lauren Nye.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Salem LDS Church (3462 North Salem Road).
