Perry Roberts Johnson passed away January 24, 2010 in Rexburg, Idaho surrounded by family and friends. He died as a result of complications following emergency abdominal surgery. His health had been failing over the last several years.
Perry was born in Roberts, Idaho, on July 29, 1923 as the fourth child of James Roy Johnson and Lovernia Elizabeth Hinckley Johnson. Perry attended Hibbard Elementary School and Madison High School. He served in the Air Force during World War II from 1943-1946, mostly in Guam. He had been a parachute rigger as a civilian at Hill Field and continued that skill in the Air Force, attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was called up again during the Korean War and was stationed in California.
Perry married and later divorced Violette Tyree. They had a son, Perry Roberts Johnson, Jr. (Seattle, WA). Perry met Lola LaDean Cottle at Hill Field and they were married February 25, 1949 in Hooper, Utah (solemnized May 1998 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple). They are the parents of Janet (Brian---deceased) Cooper and James (Janette) Johnson. Perry worked at a number of jobs, but spent most of his life as a parachute rigger and a brick, block, and stone mason. He was knowledgeable about many phases of construction. Perry later retired and went back to farming and raising cattle. He loved hunting, fishing, and camping with his family.
When his wife, Lola, suffered kidney failure and loss of balance, Perry gave years of diligent care and service to her. He also helped to care for his mother and mother-in-law.
He was preceded in death by brothers Harvey and Lenard, sister Artense, wife Lola, and one granddaughter. He is survived by his children, 14 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.
