Phillip W. Garn
Phillip W. Garn, 68, of Rexburg, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, May 14, 2009 at Madison Memorial Hospital of pulmonary fibrosis.
He was born December 6, 1940 in Rexburg, Idaho to M. Kenneth Garn and Gwen Waldram Garn. He grew up in Moody and attended school in Sugar City. Phil moved with his family to Nampa, Idaho for a year during high school. They then moved to Provo, Utah where he graduated from Brigham Young High School in 1958. He served in the Finland Helsinki Mission for the LDS church from 1960 to 1963. He attended Brigham Young University where he met his sweetheart, Christina Helena Myntti. They were married October 24, 1964 in the Los Angeles LDS Temple.
Phil was involved in business ventures with his father at College Motors, Viking Motel, and "R" Skating. He sold and installed central vacuums with his father and sons for more than 40 years. He also worked for 27 years at Madison Co-op and retired from Bowen Petroleum. His greatest joy in life came from his family, especially his grandchildren.
Phil was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many church callings, including as counselor in two Ricks College bishoprics, ward and stake financial clerk, and as a temple worker.
He is survived by his wife, Chris; six children, Kaesi (Kevin) Johansen, Derek (Marilyn) Garn, Tyler (Melanie) Garn, Sharlie (Brandt) Leslie, Cameron Garn, Andee (Chad) Porter; 23 grandchildren; a brother Brett Garn; sisters, Julie Brinton, Laurie Rich, Kris Lewis. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Tricia; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Call Garn.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 18, at the Rexburg Idaho East Stake Center located at 387 South 4th East. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg, and Monday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the stake center prior to services. Interment will be in the Teton-Newdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions to help cover funeral expenses can be made at Zions Bank in Rexburg.
