Obituary

Phillis S. Quirl, 85, passed away Monday, December 12, 2011 at Homestead Assisted Living in Rexburg. Phillis was born October 8, 1926 at Moody, Idaho. She was the daughter of Roy and DeLila Curvo Stewart. She grew up on the Moody ranch until she was a junior in high school, when the family bought a home and moved to Teton. She attended grade school in Teton and the first three years of high school at Madison. Because of the gas shortage during World War II she graduated from South Fremont High School in 1944.

She married her high school sweetheart, Brent Quirl, in the Idaho Falls LDS temple on January 16, 1946, when he was home on a 45 day furlough while serving in World War II. They were blessed with four children, two girls and two boys. Brent farmed all his life. After two years of potato crops freezing in the ground, Phillis went to work to help provide for the family. She worked as a secretary at Ricks College for 17 years before retiring in 1985, the same year that Brent retired from farming. After retirement they were able to travel to various places, but Phillis's favorite place was always home. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in January 1996 and Brent passed away in July 1999.

Phillis was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings, including teaching Primary, Young Women and Relief Society, Primary and Young Women presidencies and Young Women president.

She is survived by her children, Sandra (Lynn) Hopkins, Zeph (Pat) Quirl, Kirk (Toni) Quirl all of Teton and Denise (Lamont) Merrill of Sugar City, a brother Arden (Maureen) Stewart of Teton and a brother-in-law Norman Miller of Bountiful, Utah, 15 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Nelda Miller; a son-in-law, Kelly Hymas; and a grandson, Travis Hopkins.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, December 16, 2011at the Teton LDS Church with Bishop Craig Carter officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Teton church and Friday prior to services from 12:00 noon until 12:45 p.m. Interment will be in the Teton-Newdale Cemetery .
