Phyllis May Banta, 92, of Salem, died Sunday, March 13, of natural causes. She was born May 5, 1923, in Lost River, Idaho, to John "Jack" and Gertrude Wellard. She was born in the middle of twelve children. While she was young, her family moved to the Hibbard area where they made their home. Phyllis attended school through the 8th grade and then went to work helping at home and on the farm.
Phyllis met her sweetheart, Darrell Banta, while working for her aunt and uncle as a cook for the hired men. She and Darrell married on August 31, 1944. Together they had six children.
She worked at several jobs over the years. Some were cooking for the sawmill in Kilgore, cleaning homes, and cooking school lunch at Sugar-Salem, and being a mother and grandmother. She was an amazing cook and will always be remembered for her homemade rolls and raspberry jam.
She loved to have a beautiful yard and garden and spent many hours working at this.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many jobs in Primary, Mutual and Scouting.
She has left an incredible legacy with six children, 32 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren and 28 great-great-grandchildren. Her most loved treasure was her family and she was an incredible example of what a matriarch truly is.
She is survived by her children, Marie (Brent) Colson-Painter of Anacortes, Washington, Diana (Doug) Frentz of Mt. Vernon, Washington, Janice (Wayne) Weekes of Emmett, Idaho, Jeff (Janet) Banta of Rexburg, Sharon (Anthony) Wilson of Rexburg; a daughter-in-law Ann Banta of Ephraim, Utah; sisters Cleo Klingler of Rexburg, Esther Anderson of Idaho Falls; 32 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren and 28 great-great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Darrell, a son Brent, four brothers and 5 sisters.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 21, at the Salem LDS Chapel with Bishop Kevin Lee officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and Monday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Wilford Cemetery.
