Obituary

Preston Dell Shirley, 76, died of a lingering illness at his Las Vegas home on August 30, 2011. He was the third child of Leslie and Ethllynn Withers Shirley, born May 6, 1935 at their home in Salem, Idaho.

He grew up in the Salem area and attended the Sugar Salem schools. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

He married La Rae Carlson in the Idaho Falls Temple on June 14, 1956. They had three children Rhonda Gaye living in Salt Lake City, Utah; Steve (Tammy) Shirley of Brigham City, Utah; Russell (Carla) Shirley of Salt Lake City. Preston and La Rae later divorced and he married Jenny Marie Combs, they had a son, Sam, who presently lives in Kelso, Washington with his wife Diane and daughter Kimberly. Preston and Jenny later divorced. In 1984, he married Dorothy Williamson and they lived in Las Vegas until her death in 2004.

Preston has four children, nine grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

Preston served in the US Navy from 1956 to 1958. He really enjoyed being on a large vessel. He later worked in Alaska on a fishing vessel. He worked for several years in Moses Lake, Washington at a sugar factory. He loved working for Lee's Canyon Ski Area, and as a night watchman in the Las Vegas area for many years.

He loved to run long distances, probably because his dad did. He loved to sing and had a very nice voice. He enjoyed taking care of his beautiful rose garden in Las Vegas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Linden and Norman. He is survived by an older brother Dalby of Las Vegas and a sister Kathryn Shirley of Salem as well as his children and grandchildren.

A memorial service will he held in Las Vegas, Wednesday, September 8, at Davis Funeral Home, 6200 S. Eastern Avenue from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 10 at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg with Bishop Mike Vickers officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday from 12:00 to 12:45 p.m. at the funeral home prior to services. Interment will be in the Sugar City Cemetery.
