Reed George Carlile, 82, of Rexburg, passed away at home, Friday, October 30, 2015, under the care of hospice. Reed was born on February 19, 1933, in Charleston, Wasatch County, Utah to Roe and Pansy Winterton Carlile. He graduated in 1951 from Wasatch High School in Heber City, Utah.
On January 28, 1953, he married JoEllen Dickson. He was drafted into the US Army 6 weeks later and served in the Korean War. After returning from Korea he went to work for Utah Power and Light as a lineman and later as a crew supervisor. Reed and JoEllen had eight children together before they divorced in 1972. In 1974 he transferred to the Shelley Idaho Office with Utah Power and Light, and moved to Idaho Falls. Two years later the family moved to the Shelley, Taylor Area. Reed made his home in Shelley, Firth, and Idaho Falls areas before marrying Cheryl Dixon Mortimer in August of 1984. He retired in 1987 after working for Utah Power and Light for 35 years.
Reed and Cheryl moved to Rexburg, Idaho in 1991 to help take care of Cheryl's father. Reed lived there for the remainder of his life.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in many callings including as a leader in the Boy Scouts and as a temple worker in both the Idaho Falls and Rexburg temples. He found enjoyment in reading, especially History. Reed enjoyed traveling and was fond of the outdoors, hiking in the wilderness, fishing, and creating a beautifully landscaped yard. He also liked canning.
Reed is survived by his wife, Cheryl of Rexburg; children, Terry (Marian) Carlile of Butte, Montana, Denise (Barclay) Earl of Morgan, Utah, Gina (Carl) Christensen of Syracuse, Utah, Diane (Bryce) Lyon of Idaho Falls, Brian Carlile of Salt Lake City, Utah, Christopher Carlile of Ogden, Utah, Michelle (Steve) Cooper of Medical Lake, Washington, Matthew (Carrie) Carlile of West Jordan, Utah; step-children, Jeff (Liz) Priest of Bakersfield, California, Lori (Mark) Hansen of Rexburg, David (Emily) Mortimer of Lehi, Utah, Amy (Shawn) Warner of Brigham City, Utah; siblings, Willa (Lee) Foster of Roy, Utah, Keith (Maxine) Carlile of Heber City, DuAnne Kippen of Morgan, Don Carlile of Roy, Marilyn (Lorin) Bethers of Heber City; 27 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister and brother-in-law Theada (Jay) Johnson; brother and sister-in-law Harold (Flossie) Carlile; brother-in-law Leland Kippen and sister-in-law Dulcie Carlile.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, at the Rexburg Cemetery. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg.
