Obituary

Reed B. Sommer passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving wife and family.

Reed was the 3rd child of 6 born in Hibbard, Idaho to Hyrum and Ethel Sommer. Reed lived his youth on the family farm located on the banks of the Henry's Fork. He enjoyed spending his time fishing, playing church softball and basketball, ice skating on canals and the sloughs, swimming, and jumping off the river bridge with his siblings. He graduated from Madison High School and on June 17, 1953, he married his eternal companion, Marie Pearl Brower, in the Idaho Falls Latter-day Saints Temple.

Beginning their married life together, they were stationed with the United States Army in Fort Ord, CA, and later transferred to Fort Lewis, WA, where Reed served in the ordinance and maintenance sections. While in Fort Lewis, their first son was born. After Reed was discharged, he and his family returned to Hibbard where he started his lifelong career in the masonry business. Later, two daughters and another son were born into the family. After his retirement from approximately 30 plus years in the masonry business, Reed continued his devotion to hard work by working 10 years as a mechanical foreman with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, followed by another 10 years of working for the betterment of the community as a Madison County commissioner.

Reed found much fulfillment in his final 10-year career as a Veterans Service officer helping Veterans find benefits they were entitled to. At the young age of 80, and with a smile on his face, he asked Marie if he could finally retire. This is when you could find Reed and Marie out on the family ranch in Fremont County, working early morning hours in his yard and garden, or helping neighbors.

Reed loved supporting his children and grandchildren in all their activities, as well as following college and professional sports. Through his business, he sponsored several city league teams and enjoyed coaching. Serving in the Scouting program created many great memories for Reed and for generations of those who learned from him. You could find Reed fishing on Yellowstone Lake, hunting, boating, and waterskiing with his family, and in the winter, snowmobiling and snow skiing.

Reed was a lifetime devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in numerous callings.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years Marie Sommer, son Steven Reed Sommer, daughter Laurel Marie Robinson (Jay), daughter Marcene Pearl Blunck (L. Don), son Lane B Sommer (Sheila), 16 grandchildren, 31 (and counting) great grandchildren, and his three sisters, Carol Moore, Phyllis Matthews, and Diane Hall. He is preceded in death by his parents and older brothers Clifford and Bert.

Special thanks to the staff at Madison Memorial and Homestead Home Health and Hospice for their professional and compassionate care.
