Reed Elwin Squires, age 90, died December 6, at the Homestead Care Center in Rexburg. He was born October 31, 1923, to Whitney Napoleon Squires and Harriet Hendricks Squires in Hibbard, Idaho.

Reed grew up with four sisters and one brother. He attended school in Rexburg. He worked on the family farm and also in the coal mines of Carbon County before entering the military. At age 19, he received a letter notifying him he had been drafted and to report for service in two weeks. He joined the United States Marine Corps and went to boot-camp in Camp Pendleton near San Diego, CA. He was assigned to the 5th Marine Division as an expert rifleman. He later trained on the Island of HI.

He fought in the battle for Iwo Jima and was awarded a Bronze Star for bravery. He was also wounded and awarded a Purple Heart.

In 1947, Reed married Cora Jean Hamilton in the Idaho Falls Temple. They had five children.

Reed started his own trucking company to haul wood. Later he began buying and hauling grain to Utah for resale. In time, he added coal, brick, building and landscaping supplies and founded Squires Brick, Inc. in Rexburg. With the help of his daughter and three sons and employees, he supplied products to the building trade. His bricks are visible on homes, businesses and institutional buildings throughout the valley.

He was a member of the LDS Church and served faithfully in many callings including counselor in a bishopric, seventies president, high priest group leader assistant, and home teacher. He was a financial clerk for many years in both the Rexburg 4th and 15th Wards.
He was careful, honest and frugal in business and in life. He was absolutely dedicated to whatever he did. He quietly helped those in need and offered his equipment and expertise whenever a challenge arose.

He is survived by his wife Cora Jean of Rexburg, and children: Trudy Porter (Randall), Gina Jensen (Garth), Tom Squires (Jann), Doug Squires, Judd Squires (LuWanna) and a sister, Geraldine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 12, at the Rexburg 4th Ward Chapel, 166 South 1st East, with Bishop Brett Sampson officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and Thursday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery.
