Obituary

Robert (Bob) Elmer Strange of Newdale, Idaho passed away from this life, or graduated as he called it, to the next life on June 8, 2025, after losing the battle with prostate cancer.
Bob was born on August 27, 1942, in St. Anthony, Idaho, to Herbert and Ethel Strange. He was the youngest of three children, growing up alongside his beloved older sister, Betty, and brother, Gary, to whom he remained close throughout his life.

Bob grew up in the rural farmlands of St Anthony where he worked, played and spent much of his free time with his brother Gary swimming at the city park.  This love of swimming remained with him throughout his life and was a favorite pastime.  Many family trips and visits to Rigby Lake, Green Canyon Hot Springs and anywhere there was a pool.

As a youth, Bob was fascinated with new technologies and advances in science.  He would at this time develop an interest in radio, especially ham radio.  He was always erecting radio towers, inviting family and friends to join him and reaching out to fellow enthusiasts throughout the world.  Many nights when he couldn't sleep for this or that worry, he would be in his ham radio "shack" pounding out the morse codes to anyone who would respond.

A devoted patriot, Bob loved his country deeply. At age 17, with his parents' permission, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy alongside his brother Gary. He served honorably during the Cold War and later continued his service in the Naval Reserve until his retirement. Bob was a passionate advocate for freedom and the Constitution, and he never hesitated to speak out against the dangers of socialism, government overreach, and corruption. He loved his country and the freedoms it provided.

Bob loved to tell funny stories and jokes.  Whenever he would be with family or friends, he would often share the latest joke or funny story with you.  His smile was infectious, and he brought much laughter to those who knew him.

Following his military service, he returned home to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  He was called to teach of Jesus Christ and share the good news of the Gospel to those in Alaska and parts of Canada.  He continued to serve in many church callings throughout his life, particularly enjoying those related to emergency preparedness, where his radio expertise was invaluable.

While serving his mission, Bob became reacquainted with Carma Worrell of Chester, Idaho, a fellow missionary from the same mission. Their friendship blossomed into love, and they were married in the Idaho Falls Temple. Together, they raised six children. Bob delighted in playing games—board games, card games, croquet—and loved sharing laughter and competition with his family. However, there were many challenges and heartaches which eventually resulted in the marriage ending.  This caused a great split in the family and Bob's greatest regret of his life.

He would later find happiness and love again while serving at the Family History Center in St. Anthony, Idaho after he met Susanne Grinols from Newdale, Idaho at a family history open house.  A friendship developed and after about a year of getting to know each other they were married and began a new life together.  They would spend their time split between Quartzite, Arizona for the winter months and back to Newdale for the summers.  They developed many friendships in Quartzite and hosted many gaming parties with their friends. Bob worked hard to love and care for Susie, and she was at his side until the end caring for him.

Bob's love of learning was evident in every corner of his home—books, manuals, handwritten notes, and magazines filled his space. He earned degrees from Ricks College and Brigham Young University and dedicated most of his career to teaching. He inspired many students while teaching electronics, computer science, math, and radio technology at Payson High School in Utah, retiring with a legacy of knowledge and influence.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Ethel Strange, his sister Betty Pincock, and brother-in-law Max Pincock. He is survived by his wife, Susanne Strange of Newdale; his brother Gary (Bonnie) Strange of Menan, Idaho; his children: Cindy (Andrew) Doherty of Shawano, Wisconsin; Alan (Karen) Strange of Orem, Utah; Robert Owen Strange of the Philippines; Dale (Jamie) Strange of Taylorsville, Utah; Margo (Keith) Madsen of Tooele, Utah; and Katrina Strange of Washington state; his former spouse, Carma Worrell of Preston, Idaho; 12 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on Saturday, June 28, at 11 a.m. at the Wilford Cemetery in Wilford, Idaho.
