Roland Paul Blaser, 87, of Plano, died November 6, 2017, at his home of natural causes. He was born August 19, 1930 to Ernest and Margaret Grosnick Blaser. A lifelong resident of Plano, Roland attended school in Plano, graduating in 1948 as the last senior class from Edmunds High School.
He served a 36-month LDS mission to Switzerland and Austria, from1950 to1953. He then married his high school sweetheart, Carol Parkinson, in 1953 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Shortly after, he was drafted into the army during the Korean War and served in Military Intelligence in Germany.
Following his military service, he graduated from BYU in 1960 with a B.A. degree in Math, Physics, and Chemistry and Secondary Education. He soon started teaching math at Madison Senior High School up until 1973, when he became a full time farmer. He continued to teach overflow courses at Ricks College from 1986 to 2000.
He enjoyed a successful farming career, starting out with just 40 acres farming with his brother Fred for a few years. He then branched off on his own and farmed with his sons up until his death.
Roland had a deep love for Scouting, earning his Eagle and serving in various capacities for over 60 years. He was awarded a Silver Beaver in 1996 for his efforts.
He was active on various boards in the community throughout his life, including as a founding member of MEDCO, director on the Federal Land Bank Association Board, and director and president of the Independent Canal Company. He served on the board of the Egin Bench Canals at the time of his passing.
Membership in the LDS Church played a key role in his life, where he served faithfully in many roles including Scout master, Elder's Quorum President, a 70, Bishop's counselor, Bishop, counselor in a Stake Presidency, and as an ordinance worker in both the Idaho Falls and Rexburg temples.
The family expresses thanks to Rexburg Hospice for their kindness and for helping us as a family with the death of our loved one during this time.
Roland is survived by his children: Peggy (Rob) Hymas of Plano, Tamara (David) Horsley of Evanston, Wyoming, Eric (Liz) Blaser of Plano, David (Cindy) Blaser of Plano, Carolyn (Daniel) Medina of Mountain Home, Idaho, Jon (Candace) Blaser of Mechanicsville, Virginia; a brother Fred (Linda) Blaser of Plano; 39 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and 8 step-great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Carol Parkinson Blaser; 4 sisters, Mildred, Marjorie, Elaine, Gladys; 2 brothers, Clair, Gwyllum; a son, Mark Blaser; and 3 granddaughters, Jackie Hymas, Cieana Blaser and Chloe Blaser.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, November 10, at the Plano LDS Chapel. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and Friday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Plano Cemetery.
