Obituary

Ronald J Kinghorn, 95, of Sugar City, passed away peacefully October 13, 2011, at Homestead Assisted Living Center in Rexburg, from natural causes incident to age.

Ron was born September 15, 1916, in Lewisville, Idaho to Ray and Myrtle Jensen Kinghorn. He grew up on a farm in Bybee and attended schools in Lewisville. His father was killed in an automobile accident in 1937. Ron and his older brother Dell took very seriously the charge to take care of their mother and younger brothers and sisters and the family farm. This commitment to family continued throughout Ron's life.

Ron married Dorothy Harrison in 1940, in Sugar City, Idaho, and shortly thereafter they moved to California to find work and be closer to his mother and brothers and sisters. Ron joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served on a destroyer, the USS Strong. While he was serving in the Navy their second child was born, but Ron was able to make it home for the birth just prior to his shipping out for the South Pacific. When he was released from the Navy, Ron and his family settled in Sugar City, near Dorothy's family. Ron and Dorothy were the parents of three children, Brent, Wayne, and Janice Lee.

Ron worked for several years with his brother-in-law, Eldon Ladle, in an upholstery business in Rexburg. In 1960, he opened his own upholstery shop in Sugar City next to their home. His reputation as an excellent upholsterer was known throughout the valley. He never really quit working in his shop until his health stopped him. He loved his yard and garden and was still taking care of them well into his 90's.

Ron and Dorothy enjoyed traveling and traveled throughout much of the United States and Europe. Ron was on avid fisherman and spent many hours fishing on Camas Creek and Henry's Lake. He also enjoyed hunting and spending time at their cabin near Henry's Lake. Ron and Dorothy built the first cabin at the Lakeview Estates and it was his favorite place to be.

Ron was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Ron and Dorothy were sealed in the Idaho Falls Temple in 1965. Ron enjoyed participating in the Sugar City First Ward and appreciated his friends in the High Priest group.

Ron was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years who died in 2001, a son Wayne, who was killed while serving an LDS mission in Mexico, his parents, four brothers, a sister, a granddaughter and a great-granddaughter. He is survived by a sister, Lucille Cottle of Salt Lake City, Utah, a son Brent (Donna Jean) of Sugar City, a daughter Jan (Scott) Shirley of Archer, 14 grandchildren and 58 great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to express appreciation to the kind care-givers at Homestead Assisted Living and Alliance Hospice, as well as those faithful friends and neighbors who made Ron's last years so much happier.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 17, 2011 in the Sugar City Stake Center. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home and Monday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the stake center prior to services. Burial will be in the Sugar City Cemetery with military rites by the Madison County veterans and Idaho Honor Guard.
