Rulon Goodliffe, 68, of Rexburg, died with his daughter at his side on Feb. 23, 2017, at Teton Post Acute Care and Rehabilitation in Idaho Falls of congestive heart failure and complications of diabetes.
Rulon was born November 28, 1948, in St. Anthony. He was the first child in a family of six children born to Irvun and Marjorie Goodliffe. He attended schools in Rexburg, including Madison High School.
He attended Idaho State University, studying auto mechanics.
Rulon had a talent for mechanics, taking apart many things and then reassembling them in ways he thought would enhance their performance. He worked as an auto mechanic in the upper valley, including College Motors and Ford Garage. He loved to experiment with restoring old cars and turning them into hot rods using his mechanical skills. As a young man, Rulon had a passion for auto racing, attending and sometimes participating in local races as a mechanic or driver. He had a good ability to engineer and solve mechanical problems.
Additional employment usually involved large semi-trucks as he worked as a driver and mechanic for a variety of trucking firms. Rulon also lived and worked at several logging camps, felling trees and driving logging trucks in northern Idaho and Montana. He was very skilled at maneuvering these large vehicles within confined spaces. He also was involved in interstate trucking where he enjoyed meeting and visiting people in local cafes.
He married, and later divorced, however, two children, who he loved, were born of this union.
He loved the outdoors, especially camping and fishing and spending time in the mountains. He also loved to read.
He is survived by his children Malissa Goodliffe Groh of Tacoma, Washington, and Benjamin Scot Goodliffe; six grandchildren; two brothers and two sisters; and numerous nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his brother, Henry Goodliffe and his mother and father. Rulon will be laid to rest in the Rexburg Cemetery. At his request, there will be no funeral services.
