Sharon Lee Powers Walker, 73, of Rexburg, died Tuesday, March 19, 2013, at her home of natural causes. She was born on February 22, 1940, the eldest daughter Robert Jolly Powers and Bernice Mildred Hamm. As a youth Sharon spent a lot of time with her siblings fishing and camping on the South Fork of the Salmon River and at Lowman, Idaho.
Sharon graduated from Boise High School in 1958. She earned an Associate Degree from Boise State University graduating with Honors. In 1962, Sharon graduated in Zoology from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. At BYU she was also an outstanding student. She was a student instructor in Human Anatomy and Physiology. She was also the lab instructor of several Pre-Med courses at BYU.
While at BYU, Sharon met and married John Davies Walker on September 12, 1961. They were married for 48 years. To this marriage was born three children, Jonathan, Suzanne and Michael.
After a couple of years Sharon and John moved to Holladay, Utah where they both taught at brand new Junior High Schools. Sharon at Church Hill in the Granite District and John at Butler in Jordan District. Later they moved to Champaign-Urbana, Illinois so John could complete his graduate work at Ohio State University. They then moved to Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho.
They arrived in Rexburg, three days prior to the collapse of the Teton Dam on June 6, 1976. They had 8 feet of water in their home west of Rexburg. They pitched in to the cleaning and rebuilding effort. This challenge provided a great opportunity to meet many wonderful people who became life-long friends.
She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was held a variety of callings and loved to serve the people around her. In her later years she had many health problems that prevented her from serving as much as she would have desired. She had many friends whom she shared her many kindnesses in the form of food, crafts, gifts and a listening ear. She has been an exceptional daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her husband John of Rexburg; a son, Michael (Romayne) Walker of Rexburg; a daughter, Suzanne (Bo) Blaze of Maywood, New Jersey; two grandchildren, Zachary James Walker and Daniel Powers Walker; two sisters, Peggy (Mike) Hoobler and Joanne (Lynn) Poole. She was preceded in death by her parents, a son Jonathan Harper Walker and a sister Judy Powers.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 23 at the Hibbard LDS Chapel with Bishop Kyle Kinghorn officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and Saturday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Holladay Memorial Cemetery in Holladay, Utah.
