Sheila Mae Erickson Barney, 79 of Rexburg, passed away September 8, 2014 on a beautiful Monday morning surrounded by her loving husband and all her children at Portneuf Medical Center in Pocatello, Idaho.
She was born December 21, 1934 at her parent's home in Archer, Idaho. She was the oldest of nine children born to Bernarr and Martha (Mattie) Erickson. She grew up in Archer where she attended first through eighth grade. She then attended High School in Rexburg, Idaho.
It was at a dance in Archer that she met and fell in love with the man of her dreams, Moses Dell Barney. They were married August 28, 1951 in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple and just recently celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary. Together they were blessed with six children three boys; Dell Ray, Douglas, and Doyle. They then had three girls; LaMae, Gaylene, and Wendy. They have been blessed with eighteen grandchildren and to date forty-two great-grandchildren with hopefully many more to come. She loved being a wife and mother and took that job very seriously and took great joy in being near her family.
In November of 1963 Dell and Sheila moved their small family from their small home in Hibbard, Idaho and purchased a farm just east of the City of Rexburg. They worked hard raising animals and milking cows. They worked side by side for forty-nine years milking a large herd of dairy cattle. They ran a masonry business on the side as well where Dell and the older boys worked together leaving Sheila and the younger kids at home to milk the cows and run the farm while they were working. Sheila spent several hours, morning and night in the milk barn milking the cows and never complained. Then in 1980 they purchased their first team of draft horses which soon became one of their shared passions.
Some of her hobbies that she liked to do in her spare time were; quilting, scrapbooking, reading, and playing the piano. She also felt very strongly about politics and felt it her obligation to teach her children that living in America was a privilege and not a right. This also became one of her hobbies serving as President of the Republican women organization for four years.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she gave many hours of service in various callings. She served in the primary many years, she enjoyed being a den mother in the scouting program, and held various offices in the Relief Society as well. There was always one calling in the church that she particularly loved, it was that of a compassionate service leader. She loved serving others when they needed a little extra help and felt so happy when she felt like she had made a difference. She was always baking casseroles or bread to take to someone.
She is survived by her dear husband, Moses Dell Barney, five of her six children, Dell Ray Barney, Douglas (Lorna) Barney, Doyle (Terrie) Barney, LaMae (Dirk) Siepert, and Gaylene (Fay) Harris. She is survived by fifteen of her eighteen grandchildren, forty-one of her forty-two great-grandchildren, Two brothers; Carlo and Nolan Erickson, and two sisters Utona Garcia, and Lanta Freeman.
She is preceded in death by her parents; Bernarr and Mattie Erickson, four brothers; Gaylen, Gary, Hal, and Dan Erickson, three grandchildren; JaNece, Kimberlie, and Klayton, one great-grandchild; Tasey, and her beautiful daughter Wendy.
