Obituary

Shelley Jenkins Johnson, 64, of Rexburg, passed away September 20, 2014, surrounded by her loving husband and children at Madison Memorial Hospital in Rexburg, Idaho. She was born June 28, 1950 at the Mckee Maternity Home in Rigby, Idaho. She was the oldest of seven children born to Frank and LoRene (Ricks) Jenkins. She grew up in Rexburg, Idaho where she attended Madison High School. She was very active in sports all through grade school and in to college. She was a fierce competitor and had many trophies to show for her accomplishments.

Shelley attended Ricks College and received her Associates Degree and then continued her education at BYU where she received her Bachelors of Science degree in Physical Education and a minor in History. Shelley made the National Deans List. She had a love of learning and teaching and continued learning until she was certified to teach every subject but math, which was a foreign language to her.

While attending Ricks College, she was a part of the synchronized swim team and it was at registration where Shelley met Frank and fell in love. They married in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple and they celebrated their 42nd wedding anniversary this year. Together they were blessed with six children; Shane, Brandelyne, Jared (deceased), Jessica, Erik, and Judd. They have also been blessed with four beautiful grandchildren; Jason, Kayden, Kyrie, and Ian and two great-grandchildren; Haylee and Austyn. She loved being a wife, mother and grandmother. Family was very important to Shelley and she loved to talk about them to anyone who would listen. They were her pride and joy and it showed in her everyday life.

As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, she gave many hours of service in various callings. She served in the Scouting program, Nursery, Primary, Relief Society, Sunday School and as a Gospel Doctrine teacher. She was always helping those in need and was always giving of her time and talents. She always had food and desserts ready to be taking to someone or even a box of chocolates to brighten someone's day.

Shelley's other passion in life was teaching. She was excellent at what she did and touched many of her students' lives. Shelley had taught for a total of 26 years. She started her career at Madison Jr. High and then took a break to raise her family and resumed teaching at the Youth Services Center in Saint Anthony, Idaho. From there she went to the Jr. High at Sugar Salem school district for a short time and moved to the High School. While at Sugar Salem High School she became well known for the throwing of her "shoe." From there she started Valley View Alternative School for Sugar Salem and taught there for nine years. She developed a lasting relationship with many of her students and made sure each one felt important. She always called them her kids. Shelley spoke at her students' graduation this last year and received a standing ovation. She was also featured this year in the "Our Town" by The Standard Journal.

One of Shelley's hobbies was cooking. She loved to cook. With her husband, they attended and participated in many Dutch Oven Cook offs where she created her own recipes. One year they took fourth in the nation at The National Dutch Oven Cook Off. She created many cook books for her family to enjoy and published a Dutch Oven Cookbook. She also enjoyed spending time with her family by playing games, fishing, and camping.

She is survived by her husband, Frank Jensen Johnson, five of her six children, Shane (Jodi) Johnson, Brandelyne (Brian) Lewis, Jessica Johnson, Erik (Dana) Johnson, and Judd (Megan) Johnson. She is also survived by her four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, five sisters and two brothers.

She is preceded in death by her son Jared Johnson and her parents, Frank and LoRene Jenkins.

Funeral Services will be held at 11:00am, Friday, September 26, 2014 at the Henry's Fork Stake Center. The family will receive friends, family, and students, Thursday, September 25th from 5:30-7:00pm at Flamm Funeral Home and Friday from 10:00-10:45am prior to services at the stake center. Interment will be at the Sutton Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Flamm Funeral Home.
