Stephen Mack Meikle Jr., 86, formerly of Rexburg, died Thursday, January 28, 2009 at his home in Idaho Falls. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. , Friday, February 5 at the Thayerwood LDS Church located at 5255 South 5th West in Idaho Falls. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and on Friday at the church from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. prior to services. Interment with military rites will be in the Fielding Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Meikle was born March 22,1923 in Victor, Idaho to Stephen Mack Meikle, Sr. and Vashti Larkin Price Meikle. At age 12 he was severely burned over 40% of his body but survived the odds to do and to succeed in most anything he wanted. He graduated from Teton High School where he was a punter on the football team, was drum major and played the saxophone and oboe. After a year at the University of Idaho he joined the Army Air Corp in 1943 and became a pilot of great skill. He served as a flight instructor during World War II as a captain with over 3000 flying hours. He was honorably discharged in 1945.
In 1944 he married Donna Maxine Peacock. Their marriage was solemnized in 1946 in the Idaho Falls LDS temple. They were blessed with four children; Rick, Jane and twins, Jack and Jill. Donna passed away in 1963.
After the war, Steve returned to Driggs to become a banker at the Bank of Teton Valley working with his father. In 1948 Steve Sr. opened a the new Idaho Bank of Commerce in Rexburg and Steve, Jr. Became the manager. In 1959 Steve became Executive Vice President of the Bank of Commerce in Idaho Falls and later President. After his father's death, he returned to the Idaho Bank of Commerce and became President of that bank in 1976.
He married Janice Sharp Gray in 1964 and this marriage was solemnized in the Idaho Falls temple in 1965. This marriage added two children, Jamie and Jeff and Steve and Janice were later blessed with three more children; twins; Robert and Nancy and Jana. They later divorced. This completed their family of nine children.
Steve served as President of the Idaho Bankers Association, President of the Western Independent Bankers Association and Chairman of the Idaho PERSI Board. He led the first People to People Group for Bankers into China in 1981. The bank was sold to Key Bank in 1992 and Steve retired. He married Julie Webster in 2001 and later divorced.
As a member fo the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints he served as bishop of the Rexburg 11th Ward. He enjoyed golf, flying and spending time at his cabin on I.P. Bills Island in Island Park. He also enjoyed riding his Gold Wing motorcycle and traveling in his motor home.
Survivors include his children; Rick (Karen) Meikle, Jane (Todd) Taggart, Jamie King, Jack (Laurie) Meikle, Robert Meikle, Jill (Mike) Stevens, Jeff (Steve Kellam) Meikle, Nancy (Fred) Luthy, Jana (Boyd) Pendleton, a brother James (Marie) Meikle, 24 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Donna and a sister Helyn.
