Steve Hawkes
Steven Hawkes of Sugar City passed away at the University of Utah Hospital on Sunday, February 2, 2014 from complications of pneumonia.
He was born February 14, 1952 in Ashton, Idaho to Percy Blaine Hawkes and Bonnie Marie Clark. He was raised in Farnum, Idaho, then at the age of 8 the family moved to Providence, Utah to attend school. After their schooling the family returned to their family farm until at the age of 11 where they permanently moved to St, Anthony, Idaho.
In 1969 during his Junior year in high school he won the Idaho Class "A" State Wrestling Title. A month later he was high jumping and fractured his neck, and was paralyzed from the neck down. After months of recovery he was able to regain a good portion of his mobility.
He's a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a mission in the Texas South Mission. He graduated from BYU in Provo with a teaching degree, and taught Industrial Arts in St Anthony for five years. He excelled in wood working.
He married Carolyn Lambert in the Idaho Falls Temple on August 13, 1982. They lived in Idaho Falls while Steve attended ISU earning a Masters of Education in Counseling and Guidance degree.
They moved to Cowley, Wyoming where Steve was the first counselor for the Rocky Mountain High School in Byron, Wyoming. Two years later they returned to Idaho and made their home in Sugar City where he was a counselor for the Sugar Salem School District from 1985-2002. He served a term as the president of the Idaho Counseling Association, and treasurer for the Idaho Schools Counselors Association. He loved helping students get college scholarships, and upon receiving the Crista McAuliffe Fellowship he developed and distributed individualized scholarship information for each high school throughout Idaho. In 2002 he was named the Idaho Counselor of the Year.
Most recently he was serving as a worker in the Rexburg Temple baptistry, a member of the City of Sugar Planning and Zoning Committee, and ward Scoutmaster.
What Steve lacked in physical abilities he more than made up for in helping others. If asked what Steve's greatest accomplishment was it would be helping his family and serving in his church callings.
Survivors include his wife Carolyn, son Daniel (Amber) Hawkes, daughter Felicia Hawkes, brothers Bill (Luisa), Don (Susie), Michel (Wendy), Jeffrey (Lynda), Philip (Diane), Bob (Sharlene), sisters Cindy (Alan) Kingsford, Suzanne Peterson, Toni (Terry) Miller.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and a brother-in-law Ray Dean Peterson.
