Obituary

Steven Kent Webster, of Sugar City, ID died on Sunday January 28, 2024 at the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center at the age of 76 following complications related to heart surgery.

Steve was born on Oct 5, 1947 in Rexburg ID to Mark and Donna Webster. He was the 3rd born of 9 children.  He enjoyed many of the blessings of growing up in small town America. Some of his favorite childhood memories were playing kick the can with neighborhood kids, sleeping outside in the summer with friends so they could raid people's gardens at night, climbing the "forbidden" water tower, swimming in the canal, and riding horses. He was an active Boy Scout who earned his Eagle Scout award, and often spoke of attending the once in a life-time experience of attending the National Scout Jamboree in New York.

Steve lived in the Rexburg/Sugar City area all of his life and loved swimming in the local swimming holes, waterskiing, snowmobiling, and trying to keep his hunting and fishing spots a secret.

Steve worked many different jobs throughout his life. Right after graduating from Sugar Salem HS in 1965, he went to work for Boeing in Renton WA helping to drill holes and install rivets on the 707 aircraft. After several months of working for Boeing, he found out that many of his friends had been drafted into the Vietnam war. He returned to ID, and had received his draft papers. Fortunately, following a medical exam he was classified as 4Y and unable to serve at that time. He went back to Boeing with a few friends, but after a few months they were impacted by a wide scale reduction in force. He returned to the Sugar City area where he worked for his brother in law (Francis Ripplinger) on their farm in Driggs. Steve loved working on the farm and has many great stories about putting in fencing, opening up natural springs for water troughs, driving the farm equipment, and hunting and fishing in the surrounding area. Steve later moved to Pocatello where he worked at a GM dealership in the parts department. It was during this time that he started dating Marlene Hill who was there attending cosmetology instructor school. Steve loved to watch Captain Kangaroo while babysitting Marlene's son, Bart. Bart later presented Marlene with an engagement ring and asked Marlene if she would marry "us".  Steve and Marlene eloped and were married in Elko Nevada in 1969.

Steve, Marlene and Bart eventually moved back to Rexburg where they had two more children (Bret and Stelene). Steve worked at Upper Valley Electric for 12 years. Steve tested for and became a Journeyman Electrical Contractor where he then worked for the Stud Mill in St Anthony (until they closed), Louisiana Pacific sawmill in Rexburg (until they closed), enjoyed doing his own contracting business, and finally finished his career where he retired as a high voltage electrician for BYUI.

Steve is well known around the community with a big circle of friends who knew him as a soft spoken, hard working man who would do anything for his family and friends. He didn't try to be someone that he wasn't. He didn't complain about his circumstances, and he proved over and over that he could do hard things. He always meant what he said, and you could trust that it was sincere. One of his favorite pastimes was to fish Henry's Lake and Island Park Reservoir with family and friends which he was still doing until just a few weeks ago.

Marlene and Steve were married for almost 54 years and were sealed together in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple in 1983. Marlene and Steve have 3 married children Bart Summers, Bret Webster, and Stelene Lawrence. They have 13 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren.

We are looking forward to joining Steve on the other side where we can continue building what he started on earth.

Love you so much.  We'll see you on the other side!

Marlene, Bart, Bret and Stelene
