Obituary

Susan Alice Herker, 78, was called back to her Heavenly Father on November 11, 2024.  She was born on September 8,1946, in Des Moines, Iowa, to William August Herker, Jr. and Alice Loraine Jones Herker.  She was the oldest of four children.

Susan was raised and received her education in Des Moines. She graduated from Des Moines Technical High School in 1964 where she took business classes.  After she graduated, she worked in Sparks, Nevada. She then returned home and worked various jobs in Des Moines until she was called to serve a mission for her church.  She served faithfully in the Montana-Wyoming mission, spending six months of her mission in the mission home as the secretary to the Mission President.

After returning home from her mission, Sue joined her sister Gwen in Salt Lake City.  She worked for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints doing name extraction. She loved her work and remained in Salt Lake City for 10 years.  In 1980 the sisters moved back to Des Moines. Susan then started her career as a secretary for an insurance company.  In 2000 she became a secretary in an outpatient therapy clinic. It was a different challenge for her, but she learned to love the work and enjoyed meeting new people daily.

Susan and her sister Gwen loved to travel and did a lot of it.  They went to Chicago often to visit and work in the Chicago Temple. They also enjoyed trips each summer to visit with family and friends. These road trips were filled with many happy adventures and memories.
After retiring in 2010, Susan and her sister moved to Rexburg to be closer to family. Although they missed friends and family in Iowa, they both enjoyed their new home and making many new friends and memories. All of Susan's friends played a very special part in her life, and she loved them all so much.

Susan was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had a very strong testimony of the Gospel and enjoyed reading the scriptures, especially the Book of Mormon. She enjoyed her service in Sunday School, Primary, Young Women's, Relief Society, and singing in the choir.  She tried to live her life as Christ would. Susan is loved by so many.  She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to have known her.

She is survived by her brother, William Eugene Herker (Joann), Sister-in-law, Ina Herker, nieces and nephews; Alison Love (Jeff), Jean Vogler (Dan), Christopher Herker (Tammy), Nicole Paulsen (Anthony), Joseph Herker, Amy Herker, David Herker (Dani), Joshua Herker (Isay), Jonathan Herker, and many great nieces and nephews. She loved each and every one of her nieces and nephews and their children as if they were her own.   She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Gwen Elizabeth Herker, her brother Bruce Richard Herker, and nephew Scott Herker.  Internment for both Susan and her sister Gwen will be later next summer in Ankeny, Iowa in the Ankeny Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
