Obituary

Trent L. Thompson, age 44, of Rexburg, died July 11, 2013 at home following a brief illness of esophageal cancer. He submitted to his challenge like an obedient child and fought like a brave and valiant warrior. He is now running like the wind and not looking back.

Trent was born Dec. 22, 1968 in Idaho Falls, Idaho to R. Larry Thompson and Sally Winger Thompson. He grew up in Rexburg and attended Madison High School, graduating in 1988. He attended Upper Valley Industries for a short time. Upper Valley Options, a Developmental Therapy Program, has been like a second home to him for the past 12 years.

Trent had cerebral palsy since birth but that didn't stop him from having a full and happy life. He loved people and people loved him. That was his gift to life. He was an Eagle Scout at age 16. He was also the March of Dimes Poster Child for 1984. He enjoyed the computer, Face Book and e-mailing his numerous friends. He loved recording his favorite television shows, especially Discovery Channel, and listening to music. His favorite hobby was shredding paper. The corner by his house was his favored spot in the summer to meet and visit with old and new friends. He especially loved his many college aged friends. He had a cheerful countenance, optimistic outlook, and a great sense of humor. He loved being teased and loved to tease back. His wonderful laugh was infectious and his smile will never be forgotten.

Trent was an active member of the LDS Church and held the office of High Priest. He served diligently as the assistant Sunday School Secretary. He enjoyed attending the Temple and was a faithful home teacher until he was too sick to fulfill his responsibilities. He had a strong testimony of the gospel.

Survivors include his parents Sally W. Thompson of Rexburg, R. Larry Thompson of Dix, Nebraska; a sister, Tavia (Shane) McVey of Idaho Falls; and a nephew, Matthew Vernon Armstrong.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Vernon and Doris R. Winger of Driggs; Ralph and Melba Thompson of Rexburg; and an uncle, Gerald Hegsted Winger.

The family expresses their appreciation for the tremendous outpouring of love, many kindnesses, and the generosity of so many people.

The family would like to also thank Hospice of Eastern Idaho for their excellent care.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, July 17, at the Rexburg 5th Ward LDS Chapel, 590 Summerwood Drive in Rexburg, with Bishop Ed Kumferman conducting. The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 16 at Flamm Funeral Home and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. at the Church prior to services. Burial will be in the Driggs Cemetery at 2:00 p.m.
