IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Troy Thomas
Hinkle
August 1, 1971 – July 3, 2025
Troy Thomas Hinkle, 53, passed away on July 3, 2025, in Rexburg, Idaho with his daughter by his side. This was a result of a long but courageous battle against esophageal cancer.
Troy was born in Rexburg, Idaho on August 1, 1971 to his parents Carol Wortz and Brent Tanner. He grew up in Parker and St. Anthony, Idaho with his younger sister Jeri. Troy and his sister were adopted by their stepfather, Greg Hinkle, changing their last names from Tanner to Hinkle. As a child, he enjoyed swimming and fishing in the Henrys Fork of the Snake River, jumping off of bridges into the river with friends, hunting, snowmobiling, and getting into trouble.
He attended South Fremont High School, graduating in 1989. After this, Troy promptly enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17. He was deployed and stationed on the U.S.S. Detroit, which he and his friends lovingly referred to as the "Dirty D." He served in the Gulf War, participating in Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Following his discharge, Troy enlisted in the U.S. Navy Reserves until 1997. He always had immense pride in being able to serve this country in the U.S. Military.
Troy attended East Tennessee State University, obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology with a minor in Criminal Justice and Criminology. During his time in college, he met Anna Williams and they gave birth to a daughter, Ashlyn Hinkle. While finishing college, Troy met Sandra Collins. They got married in Winchester, Virginia in November of 1996. Together they welcomed three children into the world: Troy Hinkle II, Audrey Hinkle, and Matthew Hinkle. During this time, he worked at the Hampton Inn in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. After moving back to Idaho, Troy utilized his degree by working as a PSR Worker in the field of counseling for All Seasons Mental Health in Nampa, Idaho.
His hobbies included traveling, usually in an impulsive manner. He would set his sights on somewhere, load up his family, and set off for an adventure that same day. Troy was a huge fan of the NFL, with his most recent favorite teams being the Raiders and the 49ers, despite their rivalry. He was able to fulfill a dream to see the Raiders' former stadium, the Oakland Coliseum, and the 49ers' Levi's Stadium around Christmas 2024 with his daughter Audrey. They were also able to explore the entire West Coast during this time. He enjoyed listening to music of all genres and finding new songs every day. In the same light, he enjoyed reading and learning new things. He had an appreciation for vehicles and engines, and was an avid gun owner for many years. He also enjoyed cooking and finding new recipes.
Most importantly, Troy enjoyed telling stories, joking, and laughing; he had a lightheartedness and could find humor in any moment. His sense of humor and his silliness will be greatly missed.
Troy was preceded in death by his mother Carol Wortz, his father Brent Tanner, and his stepfather Greg Hinkle.
He is survived by his children Ashlyn, Troy, Audrey, and Matthew Hinkle, as well as his sister Jeri Rawson and his grandchildren Cayson and Charlotte.
