IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Val
Casper
August 25, 1948 – September 12, 2023
Val Ray Casper passed away on Tuesday, September 12th, 2023.
Val was born August 24, 1948 to Edwin Casper and Vonda Schnieter Casper where he grew up as the fourth generation on the family homestead. Val learned to love skiing after school on the Little Menan butte that had a rope tow powered by a diesel engine. After graduating from High School, he received his mechanical engineering degree from Idaho State University. He attended Stanford University in pursuit of a Master's degree.
Despite hard work and long hours at the farm and mechanical engineering, he still found time to ski his mountain, where he met Sheryl Harder in 1977. Val and Sheryl brought two children, Patrick and Elyse, into the world. They were raised, of course, to split their time between the slopes of Targhee and the fields of the farm.
Val was a strong man with an abundant mustache that absorbed any unnecessary words before they left his mouth; though judging by the ever-present twinkle in his eyes, it may have also concealed a sly smile. Val often hoped out loud that he would never get too old to farm, and he
still hit the slopes at 74. Though Val said very little, his actions spoke loudly and consistently, and to his very last hour, he worked hard on his farm and protected his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents Edwin Casper and Vonda Casper, son Patrick Casper, siblings Lora Lee Casper, Rex Casper, LaMar Casper, Marilyn Casper, and first wife Linda Jean Kearney.
Val is survived by his wife Sheryl Harder Casper, daughter Elyse Casper, and siblings Ann Maire Casper Barnes (Bruce Barnes) and Richard Casper (Leasa Casper).
