Velma Schwendiman Calaway, 85, of Salem, Idaho, passed away July 15, 2016, at Carriage Cove in Rexburg. She was under the care of Solace Hospice and her loving family.
She was born September 26, 1930, to Norval G. And Artella Ward Schwendiman, the fourth of seven children.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She attended elementary school in Newdale and graduated from Sugar-Salem High School in 1949. It was during high school she met her future husband, Blair Calaway. They were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on December 20, 1950.
Velma loved to oil paint and was an excellent cook. She enjoyed making candy, baking bread and pies to share with family and friends. She loved spending time in the mountains, watching the cows, picking huckleberries and staying at the family cabin. She loved her yard, watching and feeding the birds, and her many beautiful flowers.
She is survived by her daughters Patsy (Jeff) Jones and Cindy (Jeff) Pratt both of Idaho Falls; son Kevin (Debbie) Calaway of Terreton, daughters Mitzi (Bob) King of Vancouver, Washington and Collette (Gary) Wagoner of Blackfoot; a sister Maureen (Eldon) Scott of Annis; a brother Lynn (LeeAnn - deceased) Schwendiman of St. Anthony; 16 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 59 years, who died the same day six years earlier; sisters, Dorma Nelson of Teton, Rea Pincock of Heyburn, Idaho, Elva Crain of Teton and LuDean Crain of Horsefly, B.C. Canada.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 19 at the Salem LDS Chapel. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at Flamm Funeral Home in Rexburg and Tuesday from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. at the church prior to services. Interment will be in the Sugar City Cemetery next to her beloved husband.
