Wilbert Rogers Atwood, 95, of Sugar City, died Monday, June 27, 2011 at Homestead Assisted Living in Rexburg, of causes incident to age.
He was born November 19, 1915, in Spanish fork, UT, to Wilbert Atwood and Blanche Agnes Rogers. He attended schools in Pingree and Thomas. However, the depression caused the Thomas School District to shut down for financial reasons.
He attended Fillmore High School, his junior year returning to Thomas the following year to graduate. He attended Ricks College and received a two year teaching certificate.
In Thomas he met his sweetheart, Ruth Barnes. They were married November 6, 1939 in Rexburg. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. After their marriage, they lived in Pingree, Weippe, , Blackfoot, and they have lived in Sugar City since 1949. He was employed as a farmer/rancher, mechanic, truck driver, PMA office, and retired after 23 years with the Idaho Highway Department.
After he and Ruth were retired they spent their winters in Parker, Arizona, and Hurricane, UT. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved his family. He loved to hunt fish, camp, travel and in his later years was dedicated to temple work.
He is survived by his children, Roger (Nancy) Atwood of Rexburg, ID; Steven (Colette) Atwood of Arco, ID; Julie (Bruce) Anderson of West Valley City, UT; sisters, LaRue Hetler of Salem, OR; Rayola Neff of Blackfoot, ID; Fontella (Doug) Cobbley of Idaho Falls, ID and a brother David Craig (Marge) Atwood of Blackfoot, ID; 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Ruth, brother John and sister Dale.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, June 30, 2011 at the Riverside Chapel with President Steven Atwood officiating. The family will receive friends Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. at the chapel prior to the services. Burial will be in the Riverside-Thomas Cemetery under the direction of Flamm Funeral Home.
